National School Well - Cahasse, Haiti
11/11/06 - PEOPLE SERVED: 2000

A well was drilled 17 years ago by an NGO that had since left without ever installing a pump. With a total well depth of 142 feet, a 6” diameter casing, and a water column of 126 feet it was an incredible find. When we first saw it, it had cactus growing around it. It was like finding a spring in the desert.
The only other water available is from hand dug wells, or from the river. Two of the hand dug wells have hand pumps installed in cement lids on top of the wells, but there was 1 foot of water in the well. The residents were lowering buckets into these wells to get what they could. Some people might have also been getting water from the river, and without this new well many more people would be going to the river which is very contaminated.

We hired local laborers to construct a large cement pad of cement blocks, sand, and cement, to come over top of the steel pipe and PVC casing. Bolts were placed in the cement to install the Hand pump to the base and the well was chlorinated.

There was a crowd of approximately 70 people the day the pump was installed. Each of our 5 member team gave a short testimony to the love of God that brought us there and how many others had helped us in coming as well.

I was thirsty and you gave me drink.
